Ride the Dinosaur is award-winning poet and JUNO-nominated songwriter Brendan McLeod’s first foray into family music.

The EP was born out of his kid’s show Holy Guacamole, a combination of original poetry and music he’s toured to primary schools for the last two years.

To record the tracks, Brendan turned to legendary producer Ken Whiteley (Raffi, Fred Penner, Sharon, Louis, and Bram), and surrounded himself with accomplished drummer Gary Craig (Bruce Cockburn, Jann Arden) and bassist Brian Kobayakawa (Serena Ryder, Jill Barber). The resulting collection features catchy melodies, dynamic musicianship, and fun, kid-centric lyrics embedded with deeper themes to engage adult listeners. While “Ride the Dinosaur” is a straight-up primary school banger, “The Dog’s Case for a Walk” works as both a dog’s straightforward entreaty to leave the house and a meditation on a heartbroken pet owner. “Bedtime Anthem” is about Brendan’s daughter’s refusal to sleep —a joyful, onomatopoeia-filled protest song featuring great violin work from special guest John Showman. “What Happens on a Train (When a Monkey Comes In)” brings the narrative chaos, as well as an invitation for both adults and kids to consider the consequences of their actions.

The full-length album is due in 2025, but for now, jump on the dino, and enjoy the start!
